Strategic Partnership for Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling in Romania: REDIVIUM, ECOWES, and SNRB
REDIVIUM Australia, in collaboration with ECOWES, the leader in battery collection and recycling in Romania, and the SNRB Association, the national body responsible for recycling, have launched an ambitious project to introduce the country’s first Lithium-Ion battery recycling system. This facility will have an initial processing capacity of 10 tons per day, utilizing the advanced REDIVIUM technology, already successfully implemented in Germany.
Project Announcement
On February 1, 2024, at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, under the patronage of the Senate of Romania’s Commission for Communications, Information Technology, and Artificial Intelligence, the investment of over 40 million euros was announced. This collective effort highlights Romania’s role as a regional leader in battery recycling, strengthening the country’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Participants and Discussions
The press conference was attended by government officials, representatives of local and national authorities, as well as delegates from REDIVIUM, including CEO Brett Salt and other key directors. Additionally, Eric Ruyters, the Secretary-General of EUCOBAT, emphasized the importance of European collaboration in this sector.
Discussions about this partnership began as early as 2022, culminating in visits to Primobius GmbH facilities in Germany, which serve as a best practice example for battery recycling.
Objectives and Benefits
This collaboration aims not only to advance Romania’s capacity in managing battery and accumulator waste but also to promote a circular economy model at both the national and European levels. The goal is to reduce environmental impact by efficiently recycling used batteries and production waste, while simultaneously ensuring access to recycled raw materials for the rapidly growing electric vehicle industry.
About the Partners
REDIVIUM Ltd is recognized for its innovative approach in the recycling of critical materials, such as electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The company has established a strong reputation for its advanced recycling technologies, already applied successfully in Germany.
SNRB (National Association for Battery Recycling), a member of EUCOBAT and partner of RENEOS, plays an active role in the collection and recycling of batteries across Romania. Its efforts are essential in ensuring that waste management practices align with national and European environmental standards.
ECOWES, on the other hand, has significantly expanded its battery recycling operations, becoming a key player in the local market. With its advanced technology and dedication to sustainability, ECOWES is a crucial contributor to the Romanian recycling industry.
This partnership between REDIVIUM, ECOWES, and SNRB highlights Romania’s firm commitment to sustainable recycling solutions, marking an important step toward environmental protection and the promotion of green technologies. Together, these organizations are driving forward the country’s transition to a circular economy while making significant strides in battery recycling and waste management.
